“No man, not even a doctor, ever gives any other definition of what a nurse should be than this ‘devoted and obedient. This definition would do just as well for a porter. It might even do for a horse. It would not do for a policeman.”

The Message: Nightingale was fiercely advocating for nursing to be recognized as a highly skilled, independent profession requiring independent judgment and strict observation. She heavily criticized the prevailing Victorian view held by male physicians that a perfect nurse should merely be a submissive, mindless servant.
ナイチンゲールが強く訴えていたのは、看護とは、自律的な判断と綿密な観察を要する高度な専門職として認められるべきだ、という点でした。彼女は、理想的な看護師とは従順で思考力を持たない召使いにすぎないとする、当時の男性医師たちの間に蔓延していたヴィクトリア朝的な見解を激しく批判しました。
